DISD Superintendent's Fate Still Undecided
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The leader of the Dallas Independent School District still has his job, for now. But will Superintendent Mike Miles get to keep his position permanently? School board trustees met late into Thursday night, ending shortly before midnight, and spoke about that marathon session afterwards.
Miles asked the school board to "stay the course" and allow him to remain at the helm of the DISD, even though many people are unhappy with the way that he is transforming the district.
"I want you to know I am prepared to reset the relationship with the board and move forward, and help our students get the best education possible," Miles said. "Our students, staff and community need us to stay focused on our children's future. I plan to do that."
But the case is not closed.
Former school board president and current trustee Lew Blackburn said that there should definitely be consequences for Miles, but trustees have not yet decided what that will entail. Blackburn added that the superintendent's termination could still be a possibility. "At this point, I think anything we do is going to send a message," Blackburn said. "We just have to deliberate and make sure we send the right message."
Blackburn said that termination is "always a possibility when we have an employee that violates policy."
Miles said that, at times, he has been frustrated by the criticism which he has received, and it has taken its toll. But he is asking the board to keep him around as the district's superintendent. Miles said that he hopes the board members are agreeable, and will look at ways to move forward.
Blackburn expects there to be a final decision sometime this month. "We have to make sure that we do what's best for the students of our district, what's best for Dallas," he said. "So, if it seems like we're taking too much time, it's because we're trying to do the right thing."
