Lone Star College Student Speaks About Subduing Attacker

HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM) --  The stabbing attack spree that injured 14 at a Houston-area college may have continued had a group of students not intervened. Steven Maida was one of the students who chased down and helped subdue 20-year-old suspect Dylan Quick.

Maida, a 21-year-old freshman at Lone Star College-CyFair and former wrestler, was walking to his car when he saw a group of people running from the building.

"There's a guy up there stabbing girls in the face," one girl told Maida.

"I thought that was the most messed up thing," said Maida. "I thought to myself, you have to go up there and help them out."

Maida entered the building only to find more victims bleeding, directing him in the direction of their attacker. He, along with three other guys, eventually chased down and tackled Quick in the school's parking lot.

"I was on top of him just asking while holding him down, 'why, why would you do this? What made you want to hurt these girls?'"

Maida says he and his classmates held the suspect down for 10 to 15 seconds before police arrived and cuffed him. And while many are calling the men heroes, Maida disagrees.

"It's kind of over the top as far as a hero. Maybe just an open-hearted person. I like to care for people," Maida said on 103.7 Lite FM with Zazza & Julie. "There are many cops and firefighters that never get called a hero."

Quick has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault in the incident and has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. He is due to appear in court on Thursday.

Five of the victims still hospitalized have been upgraded to good condition.
