Local ROTC Cadets Raising $ For Explosion Victims

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Some North Texas Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets have launched a grassroots effort to raise money for victims of the explosions at the fertilizer plant in West, Texas.

ROTC cadets at Texas Christian University (TCU) have a table and are taking donations at the Student Union.

Emily Mittag told NewsRadio 1080 KRLD that cadets came up with the idea off the cuff. "It was organized quickly yesterday. Cadets volunteered last minute, last night, for their time to come and sit at the table today."

Mittag said she, her fellow cadets and classmates are all aware of the many tragedies that have occurred in the last few days, but they just wanted to do what they could for Texas neighbors.

"Obviously not taking away anything of what happened in Boston, but this is an opportunity for us to help people right next door," Mittag explained. "I just really think that you should do all you can to help people in need. There are obviously tragedies everyday, all over the world and when something happens this close I think you really need to take advantage of that and help out as much as you can."

All of the money raised will be given to the American Red Cross and Mittag said no amount is too small. "One person put in a penny. I know that doesn't seem like a lot, but that's a penny more than they had. Everybody's so supportive of what we're doing."

If you don't have the spare cash, donated goods are also being accepted. "There is a cadet in ROTC who is from West and she's gonna be driving up there next week," Mittag explained. "We can definitively give her physical things, if that's what people want to bring to donate. She can take them with her."

So far, the response to the donation effort has been good.  The UTA ROTC Red Cross donation table is set up in the Brown Lupton University Union Building and will be there until 4:00 p.m.
