Local Filmmaker Produces "Operation Babylift"
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - When she was 22 years old, Dallas resident Tammy Nguyen Lee stumbled upon a story that entirely redirected her life.
The SMU film graduate was volunteering in Dallas when someone told her about "Operation Babylift," the U.S. initiative that airlifted more than 2,500 orphans of American military fathers and Vietnamese mothers out of Vietnam, to protect them from threat of the Communist Regime.
"I had never heard about it. It was never taught in a single history book," explained the 35-year-old wife and mother of two.
Tammy was so captured by the story, she spent five years producing the documentary, Operation Babylift: The Forgotten Children of Vietnam."
"The adoptee stories were not all fairy tales. Nothing was wrapped in a nice bow at the end," Tammy explained.
This new-found awareness of orphanages in need captured Tammy's heart -- and wouldn't let go. She and her family founded a hybrid non-profit and production company called "Against the Grain Productions" to help fund the orphanages in Vietnam.
Her mother travels overseas every year to make sure the money is properly spent.
