Listeria Link Forces Blue Bell Ice Cream Recall

BRENHAM (CBSDFW.COM) - Blue Bell Ice Cream is recalling more products that may potentially be contaminated with Listeria. The Texas company and the Food and Drug Administration announced the recall on Monday.
This time, the recall covers three varieties of three-ounce ice cream cups -- chocolate, vanilla and strawberry -- with tab lids, the kind which are typically used in food service settings and offered in hospital or school cafeterias. Other sizes of Blue Bell products and other flavors of the ice cream cups are not included in this recall.
The cups were distributed across 23 states including Texas and Oklahoma, however, they were not sold at retail outlets.
There have been no reports of sickness, but a chocolate ice cream cup from a Kansas hospital tested positive for Listeria earlier this month. The cup was produced in Oklahoma early last year.
Blue Bell had previously recalled other ice cream products due to Listeria links.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections. It can even be fatal for small children, elderly individuals or those with weakened immune systems. Patients often experience a high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
