Limited Marijuana Law Prompts Action In Arlington

ARLINGTON(CBSDFW.COM) - After 140 days in Austin, lawmakers adjourned Monday afternoon. Among the bills passed during this legislative session, a limited medical marijuana bill.
Even though the new medical marijuana law will affect fewer than 150,000 people, some see it as the opening to a Texas-sized marijuana boom.
"In truth, this is the greatest opportunity for profitability for the average person since the gold rush," says Kate Mullen of Green Rush Texas.
A marijuana-based oil can now be prescribed legally for people with epilepsy or who suffer profound seizures.
The oil doesn't contain THC which gives people a euphoric high.
But that small medical marijuana opening has entrepreneurs lining for a shot at a state license to produce cannabis.
"Of course the licenses are going to go to the best possible candidates," says Mullen. "And the ones that knew how to pitch their businesses. The ones that knew how to present their businesses. The ones that knew the regulations that would be inherent."
That's why a seminar in Arlington next weekend will focus on creating businesses under Texas' new law.
But its organizers see cannabis oil as the beginning of new laws allowing businesses like the ones in Colorado to flourish.
"So what does this mean for Texas? It means start getting ready people! Because it's about to be legalized," suggests Mullen.
Governor Greg Abbott has said he does not plan to go any further on legalizing marijuana in Texas.
