SAGINAW (CBS11) - Ellaina Carrell was in the kitchen whipping up a batch of her grandmother's salsa recipe when she heard the sound of lightning hitting her home.
"Oh yeah, it was loud," she said.
And then her parents heard her scream.
Ellaina's hand was on the blender when she felt the pain of a shock.
"At first it hurt a lot but then it was okay," Ellaina said.
Her mother checked on her while her father checked on the house for a possible fire.
"My first reaction was to go outside and check the roof for holes," Chris Carrell said. "I saw no damage whatsoever. Then go in the attic and that's where you could smell the smoke."
The fire that resulted was trapped inside of the chimney flue according to Fire Chief Doug Spears.
"We had some difficulty getting to it--had to tear out sheet rock, tear out chimney," said Chief Spears.
The Carrell's will have some clean up to do but they know how fortunate they were to be home when Mother Nature picked their house.
