Lewisville ISD Rezoning Sending Students To The Colony
LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - The Lewisville Independent School District school board voted this week to rezone the area south of Highway 121 and north of Parker Road. Students at two schools in the zone will now attend classes in The Colony.
Future students at Killian Middle School and Independence Elementary School will eventually feed into the Colony High School, instead of Hebron High School.
The decision has upset a lot of people.
Former Independence PTA president Cornel Bekker is distraught over the decision.
"So we as a community stood behind both Killean and Independence for four years. We gave it our all and we feel that we never asked for this rezoning," she said.
Bekker said the change is particularly disturbing since the parents in her Meridian subdivision were devoted to contributing to and improving their school.
"We all worked at it," said Bekker. "Every single PTA president that served at Independence, including the current one, came out of Meridian."
Tracee Ali lives in the Meridian subdivision and she and many other families have been particularly impacted by the decision.
"In my person situation, I've got now one daughter going to the Hebron school system and one daughter going to The Colony feeder system," explained Ali. "So it's completely split up a lot of families."
One parent said this will make the third time in five years that students at Independence Elementary have had to change schools.
Lewisville ISD spokeswoman Karen Permetti said the area in dispute was always zoned for The Colony, but transfers were allowed.
"Now the school is at capacity and we have future growth and ongoing growth [so] that we can no longer grant those transfers in the future," she said.
Permetti did say that some exceptions are being made for siblings.
"Our main goal with the grandfathering is to minimize the transition to the best of our ability. But Hebron High School, right now, can't accommodate anymore growth."
Leaders with the Lewisville ISD said the rezoning is needed to prevent overcrowding at Hebron High.
