Leaders Celebrate Demolition Of 250th "Blighted Structure"
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - As a part of Dallas Mayor mike Rawlings's Grow South initiative another "blighted structure" in the city was torn down today.
The single-family house in the 1300 block of Baden Street had received a number of citations for high weeds and litter.
Thursday's knockdown was the 250th house demolition by the city. Mayor Rawlings, Councilmember Dwaine Caraway and other City officials were all on hand to mark the occasion.
The mayor said Dallas will continue to remove the structures that are so detrimental to the south side of the city.
"It's the most beautiful part of our city, greatest amount of available land and the traffic patterns are really supporting in winning back that area," he said.
City officials said the 250th demolition was a milestone and that 250 more demolitions are a part of phase II of the plan.
Mayor Rawlings said the goal is to build, "stronger and safer neighborhoods for our residents."
City leaders say removing the houses that are neighborhood eyesores and law enforcement headaches will help change perceptions of the area and attract major business.
"We just need to organize it a little bit better and spend strategically," Rawlings said. "We spent some money to get L'Oreal [new distribution center] in here and I think over the next decade it's gonna be very bright."
Some of the goals of the Grow South Initiative are to:
- Create a private investment fund for Southern Dallas
- Continue revitalization of Downtown and surrounding communities
- Implement West Dallas Design Plan
- Build out the Lancaster corridor
