DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Just in time for the weekend, the LBJ Express Project and Interstate-635/LBJ Freeway is set to fully open on Thursday, but today residents are being invited to an open house.
Officials say the event is to help drivers "get to know the new roadway" and ask any questions they may have.
Robert Hinkle, the director of corporate affairs for the project, says the new roadway was finished ahead of schedule partly because construction got underway as the lanes were being designed. "We got in and we got out in roughly a third of the time, in about four-and-a-half years or so," he said.
In addition to the main lanes, crews also added new TEXpress managed toll lanes. The cost to use those toll lanes will vary depending on traffic, but officials say the goal is to keep drivers moving at 50 mph.
"And it's the last six-and-a-half miles, it's those submerged lanes... and of course it took the longest, because it was the most complicated. Once you get down in there and you look around you can actually see the construction marvel that that thing is."
The toll lanes will run from Greenville Avenue to Luna Road. Hinkle said, "It completes the managed lane network through that whole east-west corridor, across north Dallas."
The LBJ Express Project Open House is being held on September 8 at the Wyndham Garden Dallas North. The hotel is located at 2645 LBJ Freeway in Dallas and the event will run from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
