LB Tim Dobbins On Cowboys' Radar?
IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - No, Dallas Cowboys fans, you are not getting the linebacker likes of free agent Brian Urlacher.
The linebacker likes of free agent Tim Dobbins will have to do.
"There's about five other teams, including another one that plays in the state of Texas, that have expressed interest on him,'' agent David Canter tells our Houston sister station SportsRadio 610.
Dobbins, 30, became a starter last season for the Houston Texans after starting linebacker Brian Cushing was injured. The 6'-1", 246-pounder was a fifth-round pick of the Chargers in 2006, before he signed a contract with Miami – and was waived shortly thereafter in 2010. His greatest value may be as a special-teamer...and Canter speaks realistically about that.
"It's going to be a two-year or three-year deal with guaranteed money for Tim,'' Canter said. "There's no doubt about that. He's already said he doesn't want to come back (to Houston) and play for the one-year minimum, because he's more valuable than that. Paying a guy like that $1.5 million a year, you're getting your special-teams captain and your No. 1 backup linebacker.''
Again, that seems a reasonable target for a player like Dobbins – and Dobbins is more realistic than people like the Bears' iconic Urlacher, connected to Dallas by one internet rumor. Remember, Dallas' middle-linebacker is manned by Sean Lee. So the need there is for a replacement for his waived backup Dan Connor and nothing more.
Dallas is right at the $123 million salary-cap ceiling, which keeps the Cowboys from shopping for "name'' players. But shopping for players the caliber of tight end Kellen Davis (Bears), linebacker Chase Blackburn (Giants), defensive lineman Matt Toeaina (Bears) Matt Slauson (Jets) and Dobbins?
Pending a great deal of space being made when Tony Romo's deal is extended, that is the eventual and realistic target.
