Lawyer Says Hurd Will Plead Guilty
DALLAS (AP) - Sam Hurd's attorney says the former NFL wide receiver is expected to enter a guilty plea to charges arising from what prosecutors describe as efforts to launch a drug-distribution network.
Hurd's attorney, Jay Ethington of Dallas, says he expects the former Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys receiver will plead guilty to drug possession conspiracy Thursday afternoon in a federal courtroom in Dallas. If he does, Hurd could receive a prison sentence of 10 years to life.
U.S. Attorney's spokeswoman Kathy Colvin said no plea agreement with Hurd had been filed.
Hurd was first arrested in December 2011 outside a Chicago-area steakhouse after agents alleged he accepted cocaine. He was re-arrested last year after authorities said he tried to buy more drugs and failed two drug tests.
