Law Student Golfs Across America For Charity

CORSICANA (CBSDFW.COM) - A 24-year-old law school student from Indiana is 'driving' across America, raising scholarship money for underprivileged students -- swing by swing.

Luke Bielawski is advocating for at-risk youth at Providence Cristo Rey High School in Indianapolis by golfing across nine states this summer. The school is a college preparatory high school for students from families with limited financial means. About 90 percent of the 140 students attending the school this year are living in poverty, according to school officials. The Cristo Rey Network nationally runs 25 schools with about 6,500 students.

Bielawski hopes to raise $100,000 on a journey he calls "From Tee to Shining Tee." He has raised $36,000 so far and has even made some new friends along the way.

"We had a tire blow out in New Mexico in the middle of nowhere a month ago, ended up staying with some strangers at their home... and now they're like family."

Since fist teeing off on a beach in Ventura County in southern California, Bielawski estimates he has taken 25,000 shots and lost 3,000 golf balls. Leading by example, his 2,500-mile journey will mostly take place along paved, two-lane country roads and remote highways.

Averaging about 40 miles a day, his direction remains steadfast -- east through El Paso, Dallas, Tuscaloosa, Atlanta, Charleston and ultimately ending on the 18th green of a course on the Atlantic Ocean.
