Late Health Care Push To Focus On Large Texas Cities
MCALLEN (AP) - The federal government is targeting Dallas and Houston among 25 large metro areas nationwide to push health care signups before the end of the open enrollment period.
According to a study for The Associated Press, half of the nation's uninsured live in just 113 of the 3,143 counties. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the U.S. - about one in four people. The two biggest concentrations in Texas are in Harris and Dallas counties.
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius visited Dallas recently, and the agency is coordinating with Houston health officials on media buys in that market.
Texas has many immigrants who are in the country illegally who are ineligible for subsidized health coverage, and the state didn't expand Medicaid to cover most poor adults.
