Landspout Touches Down In Denton County
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A landspout formed near Ray Roberts Lake Saturday afternoon. It was reported at 2:35 p.m. by a weather observer at the Denton Municipal Airport, according to the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office.
Some residents in Denton County snapped photos of the what the National Weather Service in Fort Worth tweeted was a "gustnado" 8 miles east of Sanger.
The gustnado-like feature develops ahead of a strong cell as air is lifted into its updraft, according to CBS 11 Meteorologist Jeff Ray. It looks like a tornado but lacks the bite has has no real connection to the inner rotation higher up in the storm (if there was any). Gustnados rarely last more than a few minutes.
The primary threat from storms moving across North Texas through sunset are damaging microburst winds, which are capable of producing more widespread damage than landspout tornadoes, according to the NWS Fort Worth.
No injuries or damages were reported.
