LaGuardia Shut Down After Landing Plane's Gear Collapses
NEW YORK (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Air traffic was shut down at LaGuardia Airport early Monday evening after a Southwest Airlines plane's nose gear collapsed as the aircraft touched down on the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration said that the plane landed safely.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that they have 'several' accounts of people reporting physical injuries. The extent of the injuries was not immediately known. Officials stated that four people suffered anxiety attacks.
The Port Authority temporarily closed the airport.
The FAA said that the Southwest Airlines flight from Nashville landed at 5:45 p.m. Monday and safely came to a stop on the tarmac. The nose of the plane could be seen on the ground. The plane, which was carrying 149 passengers and crew, was surrounded with emergency vehicles.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines spokespeople released the following statement regarding flight 345:
Southwest Airlines flight 345 landed at New York's LaGuardia at 5:40 PM Eastern Monday evening from Nashville. The aircraft is a Boeing 737-700. Eyewitness reports indicate the aircraft's nose gear collapsed upon landing. There were 150 people on board including Customers and Crew. All Customers have been deplaned and transferred to the terminal. Initial reports indicate local responders are caring for five Customers and three flight attendants who have reported injuries at this time. Southwest is cooperating with local authorities, and the NTSB has been notified.Statement Regarding Southwest Airlines Flight 345 as of 5:20 p.m. CDT Southwest Airlines confirms emergency responders at New York's LaGuardia airport are assisting with an evacuation of flight 345 after the Boeing 737 arrived this evening from Nashville. We will provide further details when available.
Witnesses have tweeted about the wheel coming off of the plane, but that's not confirmed.
