Lady Liberty Celebrates 125th Anniversary
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
Lady Liberty, as she is also known, is a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
Lady Liberty's face was modeled after that of Charlotte Beysser Bartholdi, the sculptor's mother.
The statue's 125th birthday is Friday, October 28th and Park Ranger Dennis Mulligan says there is a lot going on- and renovations on the monument are also about to begin again.
