Kimbell Art Museum Gets Mayan Sculptures
FORT WORTH (AP) - Fort Worth's Kimbell Art Museum has purchased two large seventh-century Mayan sculptures to become part of its permanent collection.
The sculptures -- known as censer stands -- are being described as some of the largest and most sophisticated free-standing sculptures used by the Maya in rituals and to venerate deities.
A museum curator, Jennifer Casler Price, tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram only a few pieces are missing from the nearly 4-foot-tall works that came from the region near modern-day Chiapas, Mexico. Few of the censer stands remain in existence.
They go on display later this month.
Kimbell officials aren't disclosing a purchase price, but art experts contacted by the newspaper Thursday put their value at over $1 million each.
