Killed Ex-Navy SEAL Planned To Become A Rookie Police Officer
DALWORTHINGTON GARDENS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Days before ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle was killed, the most lethal sniper in American military history had begun filling out the paper work to become a police officer for the Dalworthington Gardens Police Department.
"He was ready to go," said Chief Bill Waybourn.
The only requirement Kyle asked of Waybourn is that he starts at the bottom of the ranks and would be treated like any other rookie officer.
"He had the biggest servant's heart that I think I have ever seen," recalled Waybourn.
The veteran Texas police chief had become friends with Kyle and his family a few years ago and had often discussed with the ex-Navy SEAL about his desire to become a police officer.
Waybourn said Kyle just wanted to serve whether it was on the frontlines in Iraq or on the often quiet street of Dalworthington Gardens.
As the police chief drove in Tuesday's procession, he said she was overwhelmed by the thousands who lined the route to pay tribute.
Waybourn and Kyle had been working on organizing a free concealed handgun license course for a thousand local school employees.
The announcement of the free class was scheduled for last Thursday.
Waybourn said it won't be the same now, but added he owes it to Kyle to make sure it happens.
The class is scheduled to take place on April 6th.
The police chief said, "We are going to complete it in his name and his honor."
