Kids Get Creative For Hurst Library's Train Week
HURST (CBSDFW.COM) - Kids in Hurst are 'on track' when it comes to exercising their creativity this week. The Hurst Public Library is holding their annual Train Week once again, and the highlight of the event is a tradition that finds young boys and girls building their own locomotive out of boxes.
The library sure does love trains. In the children's section, if you look above your head, you will see (and hear) The Hurst Overland Readers Railroad chugging along, suspended over the books. The model train was donated to the library back in 2004, and it sparked the facility's workers to come up with a fun idea. "In January of 2005, we had a lot of boxes," explained librarian Beverly Kirkendall. "We thought, why don't the kids make train cars out of the boxes and wear them for a parade around the library?"
Since then, the parade expanded into Train Week, and it has been a big tradition for area families.
Hurst resident Becky Henry, along with kids Collin and Lily, created some train cars for the first time. "This was a perfect opportunity for us to come do something as a family at the library, which is conveniently located near our house," Henry explained. "They're just having a ball having free reign with paint and sparkles. And Mommy doesn't let them do it at home."
The library provides art supplies and boxes, left over from city supplies.
"It encourages kids to use their imaginations, which has a lot to do with learning," said Kirkendall.
There is another train building workshop for kids scheduled for Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Hurst Public Library. The big train parade will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
