Hello everyone and Happy New Year to you!! With the holidays in full force, I forgot to wish another one of my favorite radio stations "Happy 90th Birthday" ...and that's KMOX NewsRadio 1120…The Voice Of St. Louis (note: KMOX is owned and operated by CBS Radio and this blog is copyrighted by CBS Local Media, a division of CBS Radio).
The station signed on the air on December 24, 1925. Early on the station covered some big news stories, such as the Charles Lindbergh flight across the Atlantic Ocean and the first post-Prohibition case of Budweiser Beer leaving the brewery in St. Louis for the White House. In 1927, it was one of the first stations that comprised the Columbia Broadcasting System's radio network founded by William S. Paley. Two years later, CBS purchased the station and then filed with the Federal Radio Commission to build a 50,000 watt transmitter site. Today, the station continues to operate on the 1120 frequency as a Class A AM station with a 50,000 watt signal, day and night, with a non-directional pattern, i.e., a perfect circle. Its powerful signal can cover up to 44 states plus Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
When the CBS Radio Network changed in the late 50's and became more of a news service rather than blocks of long form programming (which the CBS Television Network starting doing instead), KMOX dropped its music formats and moved more toward news, talk, and sports. The program "Total Information" airs weekday mornings and afternoons, with the news, weather, and traffic "St. Louisans" need! During the day, you can hear the best talk radio personalities in the business, such as Charlie Brennan and Debbie Monterrey. Rush Limbaugh, and Mark Rearden. In addition, the station has been the radio sports leader in St. Louis going back to 1926 when it aired the Cardinals-Yankees World Series. Today it is the radio home for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and the NHL's St. Louis Blues. And the list of personalities past and present are second to none anywhere: Jack Buck, Harry Cary, Bob Costas, Dizzy Dean, Art Fleming, and John Rooney, to name a few.
During the evenings, especially on cold nights, I will punch up the station on my car radio (even though you can listen to it online and on the radio.com app on any device). There are few radio stations in the same league as KMOX: a station dedicated to being the leader in news, information, entertainment, and sports for the St. Louis region and beyond. Folks, this is a beautiful radio station!
