Keller Woman's Murder Trial Begins
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman from Keller, who has been accused of killing her husband nearly three years ago, was back in front of a judge and jury on Tuesday at the Tim Curry Justice Center in Fort Worth. Testimony is has begun in the Michele Williams murder trial. This is a case with many twists and turns.
Williams first told police that somebody broke into her home, located in a gated Keller community. The 45-year-old wife explained to investigators that this intruder shot and killed her husband, Greg Williams.
Then, the story changed.
Williams later confessed that there was not really an intruder after all. She told authorities that she had actually staged the break-in scene, because her husband had committed suicide.
Then, the story changed again.
Williams finally admitted to firing the gun that ultimately killed her husband.
Jury selection concluded on Monday in Tarrant County and opening statements got underway on Tuesday morning. But this is a trial that was not even supposed to take place. Williams was offered a plea deal and was set to serve 18 years in jail. However, earlier this year, she made a surprising move. Williams said that she is not guilty, and asked for the trial to take place.
The original judge in the case tossed the plea deal before recusing himself from the trial. The suspect's defense attorneys stepped down as well.
Williams entered the courtroom on Tuesday wearing a white blouse and black vest. She has not shown any emotion, and occasionally appears to be jotting down notes. Her defense team maintains that her husband committed suicide.
Meanwhile, prosecutors are arguing that Williams killed her husband for a hefty amount of insurance money. The first person to take the stand on Tuesday was one of the suspect's children, Andrew O'Brien. He said that Williams approached him just a few days after the shooting, with the idea to frame her husband's ex-wife.
"Kathy Williams had been on the media talking a lot and saying all these things on the news," O'Brien said. "Michele asked me to call some friends and have them frame Kathy." He never followed through with that request, and said that he assumed his mother was just distraught from the loss of her husband.
There are also allegations that Williams used a fake sonogram to claim that she was pregnant in order to delay the sentencing. Prosecutors believe that Williams hastily took some Bible study classes in hopes of looking good during the trial. And, there is a good chance that prosecutors will point to the suspect's changing story in the days after the shooting.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, prosecutors filed more than 100 documents in this case, and about 50 of them may be used during the trial.
