Keller Students Welcome Troops Back Home
KELLER (CBSDFW.COM) - About 100 elementary school kids from Keller learned about sacrifice and service, as they greeted returning troops at DFW International Aiport on Thursday morning.
"The troops have just come home from a long journey," said 11-year-old Colton Harp. "I would tell them, 'Thank you for saving our country.'" Harp is a student at Clayton Yes! -- a nonprofit youth enrichment program. The trip to the airport was part of an overall lesson about patriotism.
Even at a young age, the students are aware of the jobs of the men and women who are coming home. "I'm thankful because they help our country be safer and they help everybody," said 9-year-old Julie Melo.
The troops who came home on Thursday were stationed in Kuwait and Afghanistan. They will have two weeks of R&R. "The ability of these people to come out here everyday and welcome us back like this, it's heart-warming and touching," said Sgt. Maj. Jimmie Brown.
The kids made posters and cheered for the troops. They also made goody bags filled with treats, collected through donation drives held at school.
"I think of them being good heroes to us," said 8-year-old Albert Cisneros, who said that he was inspired by the courage of the service men and women, and wants to join the military when he grows up. "I want to help our world and save it."
