9-Year-Old Dies In Fort Worth House Fire
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - It was a frantic scene Thursday afternoon as neighbors, civil servants, and strangers all fought smoke and flames in an effort to save four young boys from a house on fire.
The incident occurred in the 6000 block of Rockdale Road, near Intersate-35W and Alta Mesa.
While three children made it out of the house, adults were unable to rescue a 9-year-old boy. The boy wasn't found and removed from the house until first responders arrived.
Fire department spokesman Tim Hardeman said, "We got him outside as quick as we could, [and] started working on him. We did exactly what we're supposed to do."
That 9-year old, who has been identified as David Ramirez, was flown to Parkland Hospital by CareFlite helicopter but died.
When the fire broke out there were four boys, ranging in age from two to 14-years-old, inside.
Tawanda Williams lives two doors away from the house and said neighbors jumped into action. "There was a little boy in there screaming… that's how we knew who was in there."
Crystal Flores says she gave the neighbors a big rock when they couldn't break out a window. "Everybody in the neighborhood was out," she said. "We all knew to come out at the same time and we were all trying to get that boy out."
By the time firefighters arrived three of boys were safe. Lieutenant Townley said, "Firefighters discovered that they had evacuated the house before we arrived on scene and were in a neighbor's house."
The three surviving children were taken to Cook Children's Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation. Their conditions are unknown.
