Jury Selection Begins In Josh Brent Case
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Jury selection started Thursday in the case against Josh Brent. The former Dallas Cowboys player has been accused of driving drunk and killing his teammate and good friend, Jerry Brown. That deadly crash happened over a year ago, in December 2012.
Police said that Brent was driving drunk in Irving when he lost control of his car. The crash claimed the life of Brown, also a player for the Cowboys.
Brent's intoxication manslaughter trial was originally scheduled to begin in November, but it had been postponed. The trial is now set to start on Monday. Jury selection is anticipated to continue throughout the end of this week.
Brent arrived at the courthouse on Thursday morning wearing a suit and red tie. "The citizens of Dallas County will decide whether or not Mr. Brent should be held accountable and, if he is, what the appropriate punishment should be," stated Assistant Criminal District Attorney Heath Harris.
Attorneys on both sides of the case will select 12 jurors from a pool of 200 potential individuals. Lawyers had those potential jurors fill out questionnaires in order to see who would be best on the jury. The selection process was first set to happen in a different courtoom, located on the sixth floor of the Frank Crowley Courts Building in Dallas. But this is such a high-profile case that it was switched down to a room on the building's second floor.
Brown's mother has been conflicted over this entire ordeal, added defense attorney George Milner. "It's as if she had two sons and one of them died in a car accident," he said. "Do you want anything bad to happen to your other son? That is how she sees this. Josh is like a son to her."
Brent announced his retirement from the NFL last summer. If convicted, he could face 20 years in prison.
