Judge To Consider American Airlines Merger
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - American Airlines and US Airways are expected to move one step closer toward a merger on Wednesday. The deal will make the new American Airlines the world's largest carrier. But there are still a lot of formalities that must first be handled.
American Airlines parent company AMR filed for bankruptcy in November 2011. The federal bankruptcy judge in New York will consider approving the company's $11 billion agreement with US Airways on Wednesday. The merger agreement must also be approved by U.S. antitrust regulators and shareholders. The process is expected to be completed by September.
The headquarters for the new American Airlines will remain in Fort Worth.
Once the deal is done, the merged airline will offer North Texas travelers more choices, including 62 new cities. But some experts believe that prices for tickets could increase in the long run, as customers would have fewer airline options.
