Judge Quits Saudi Bomb Suspect's Texas Trial
LUBBOCK (AP) - A federal judge in West Texas has recused himself from the trial of a Saudi man accused of trying to make a weapon of mass destruction.
U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings removed himself from the case of against Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari in a tersely worded order filed Wednesday in Lubbock.
The order gave no reason for the recusal, and the court docket showed no recusal motion and no replacement. It's unclear what effect the move will have on the April 30 trial setting and an April 19 pretrial hearing.
Court documents allege the U.S. college student planned to attack various targets, including sites in New York City and former President George W. Bush's home in Dallas.
Aldawsari has pleaded not guilty. His attorney says he plans an insanity defense.
