Judge Picked To Hold Contempt Hearing For Dallas DA

DALLAS (AP) — A Wichita Falls judge will decide whether to order a punishment for the Dallas County district attorney after he was declared in contempt of court by another judge.

State District Judge Bob Brotherton was appointed Tuesday to hold a contempt hearing for Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins. Watkins was held in contempt last week for not testifying to allegations that his office improperly prosecuted an oil fortune heir for mortgage fraud.

State District Judge Lena Levario held Watkins in contempt, but did not announce any immediate sanctions. At Watkins' request, she referred the case to John Ovard, the presiding judge for the state region that includes Dallas.

Levario also dismissed the charges Watkins' office brought against oil fortune heir Al Hill III.

A hearing date wasn't immediately announced.
