Josh Brent To Meet With NFL Commissioner
OXNARD, California (105.3 THE FAN) - Former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent will meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday in an effort to get reinstated to the league, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Monday night.
Jones made the announcement late Tuesday at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard and said the team will make room for Brent if he is cleared to play again after his conviction on an intoxication manslaughter charge.
"We will, yes we will," Jones said. "In other words, we wouldn't have it today, but we will make a roster spot."
Brent was released from jail in June and finished the final six weeks of his 180-day sentence in a rehab treatment facility. He was convicted in the 2012 death of friend and teammate Jerry Brown in a DWI crash in Irving.
"Good judgment tells you let this happen on the commissioner's time," Jones said. "I don't want to be presumptuous, and there's no pressure…So the answer is no, I wouldn't dare ask him to hurry up his judgment in that area.
"There's no place for input in my mind for the club asking to facilitate something that might be to the advantage of the club. This is about the behavior of the player, the player's future in the NFL and our policies in the NFL."
Throughout most of the case, Brown's mother has stood behind Brent. That could play a big role in Brent's possible return to football.
