19-Year-Old Spieth Wins John Deere Classic
SILVIS, Ill. (CBSDFW.COM/AP) -- Nineteen-year-old Jordan Spieth outlasted David Hearn and Zach Johnson on the fifth hole of a playoff to win the John Deere Classic on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since 1931.
The Dallas Jesuit graduate who played one year at the University of Texas hit a two-foot par putt to earn a spot in next week's British Open. He is also the first teenager to win since Ralph Guldahl took the Santa Monica Open in 1931.
A stunning bunker shot on the 18th hole put Spieth into a three man sudden death playoff for the tournament title.
Spieth, Hearn and Johnson made par on the first four playoff holes, but Spieth made another par while Johnson and Hearn scored bogeys on the fifth.
His win earns him a berth in next week's British Open as well as next year's Masters Tournament, and full-time exempt status on the pro golf tour. It also earns the teenager $828,000.
