Jones, Garrett Talk About Josh Brent's Return To Dallas Cowboys
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and Head Coach Jason Garrett are weighing on Josh Brent's possible return to the team.
Earlier this week, the former defensive lineman was released more than a month early from jail, where he has been serving a 180-day sentence for intoxication manslaughter. Brent will serve the final six weeks of his sentence in a rehab treatment facility.
Brent was convicted in January in a car crash that killed teammate and friend Jerry Brown Jr. in December 2012. His blood-alcohol level on the night of the crash was more than twice the legal limit. In addition to his jail sentence, Brent must also serve 10 years probation.
Brent will complete his sentence right around the time Cowboys training camp is set to start in Oxnard, California. However, the team's owner and head coach say they are not planning for Brent to be there.
"His business with the league on reinstatement is just that, it's with the league, not with us. But we do want to support him," said Jerry Jones. "It would be way ahead of ourselves to talk about when, if and how he would join the Cowboys."
Brent retired from the NFL last July, before the league could impose any kind of penalty.
"I think the biggest thing with Josh right now is to get his life back in order," said Jason Garrett. "You know he's gone to the next phase of his process that's he's in. He's in a rehab center now. Any talk about him coming back to play football is way, way premature. He needs to get his life straight, get is life in order and any discussion about his return is really between him and the league. We will continue to support him like we always have. But, he needs to get his life squared away first. Those conversations are way premature."
