Rangers GM Daniels Discusses Profar's Future
DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Texas Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels joined 105.3 The Fan's New School on Wednesday morning to discuss the state of the team.
Daniels was asked about baseball's top prospect and rookie Jurickson Profar and whether he might remain with the team when second baseman Ian Kinsler returns from injury.
"I wouldn't rule it out," said Daniels. "I think the easy thing to do -- and probably the more likely course of action -- if there aren't regular at bats for him, for him to go back. But were always open-minded."
The team still has time to evaluate Profar, who should remain with the club for at least 10 more days (when Kinsler is expected back).
If Profar does return to AAA Round Rock, the team plans to continue playing him 80-percent at shortstop and 20-percent at second base. But could Profar possibly see time in the outfield?
"We've talked loosely about would he ever get some time in the outfield, but we haven't done it yet," said Daniels. "This guy is an athlete. My guess is you can put him just about anywhere -- except behind the plate -- and he could figure it out."
Daniels also addressed the concern over the rising pitch counts of ace Yu Darvish, the team's possible target position at the trade deadline, and the scouting of Fort Worth Cats DH Jose Canseco.
