Jerry Jones On Tony Romo And Dez Bryant's Post-Camp Status
DALLAS, Texas (105.3 THE FAN) - I might argue that Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo 's training camp is a top disappointment of the summer - not because of anything he did wrong but because his performance was so different than advertised.
But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones labels Romo's limited work following back surgery - and his union with new playcaller Scott Linehan - the most exciting part of the team's three weeks in California.
"What I'm particularly privy to is the relationship between him and Scott Linehan, our offensive coordinator," Jones said Friday to "G-Bag Nation'' on 105.3 The Fan. "They're really a great match...he and Scott hit it off beautifully."
Jones believes Linehan and Romo share a gift for utilizing the talent around them.
"(Linehan) just takes those guys and really uses their talents to call plays," Jones said. "Tony has some ability to be pretty creative in how he runs those individual plays. That's the most exciting part of camp for me so far."
One of those talents is Dez Bryant, who is working with the Cowboys on a contract extension.
"I don't talk about these contracts in this particular stage,'' Jones said. "Lets just say we're working towards those kinds of things."
But with all the positives on offense, there remain so many questions on defense, even as camp closes and the Cowboys prepare for Saturday's preseason Game 2 at home against the Ravens.
"It's gonna be a challenge on defense,'' Jones said of the regular-season hopes to improve on last year's NFL-worst performance. "We're gonna have to score a lot of points."
