IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has been named Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers Association of America.
The Cowboys finished the 2014 season 12-4, winning the NFC East and their first playoff game since 2009. This is the first time Jones has received this award.
Dallas made a number of moves before the season that paid dividends, most notably drafting offensive guard Zack Martin with the 16th overall pick out of Notre Dame. The rookie guard was selected to the Pro Bowl and named a first-team All Pro.
Linebacker Rolando McClain -- a 2010 first round selection for Oakland -- was brought out of retirement and played a critical role on a Cowboys defense that outperformed expectations. Dallas ultimately surrendered just a 6th round pick for McClain.
The front office also made salary cap moves by cutting ties with long-time Cowboys DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin.
Head coach Jason Garrett -- who signed a 5-year extension with Dallas this week -- was thought by many to be a leading candidate for Coach of the Year honors.
That award went to Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, while then-defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Bowles has since accepted the head coaching position with the Jets.
