Jerry Jones: Cowboys Have Overachieved This Season

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Few expected the Dallas Cowboys to reach 9 wins this season, a year after finishing 8-8 for the third consecutive year. No one -- not even Jerry Jones -- expected the Cowboys to reach 9 wins by Week 14.

Jones was asked on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday if the Cowboys have overachieved this season.

"I do, certainly overachieved as to what was expected," said Jones.

The Cowboys owner was quick to say that the team hasn't exceeded its talent level, just what was expected of the talent.

For instance, the offensive line, which Dallas has invested heavily in, has gelled much quicker than was expected.

Tony Romo is having a "great year" coming off back surgery, and running back DeMarco Murray is producing "more than we expected."

"Overall, we're doing a lot more out there than we expected," said Jones.

Jones also added that Rolando McClain has transformed the defense, taking on a role that "would have been a stretch to ask for before the season."

If the playoffs started today, Dallas (9-4) would be on the outside looking in. Philadelphia (9-4) owns the NFC East tiebreaker over Dallas, having defeated them 33-10 two weeks back.

Seattle and Detroit are both also at 9-4, but have a better winning percentage within the NFC and would earn the two Wild Card positions.

The Cowboys travel to Philadelphia this Sunday night.

Jerry Supports Expanded Playoffs

A vote by NFL owners this spring was delayed to potentially add one additional Wild Card team to each conference. Jerry Jones has long been an advocate of such a move.

"Let me start off by saying, I'm for two more playoff teams right now," said Jones. "I think we have the number of people in the league that are for that and it's just a question of when, in my mind."

Many are calling for playoff reform in light of the futility of the NFC South this season. Atlanta, currently sitting at 5-8, is leading the division and is currently battling New Orleans (5-8) and Carolina (4-8-1) for the right to host a playoff game this month.

Jones calls this situation an aberration. "In my mind, the division champ ought to get in."

So when could we see two additional teams in the playoffs?

"I think it could come immediately."
