AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Former President George H.W. Bush didn't make it, but Jeb Bush was on hand to see his son officially take office in Texas.
George P. Bush was sworn in Friday as Texas land commissioner. The 38-year-old political newcomer sat next to his father in the Texas Senate while formally taking the reins of the state agency that oversees vast oil and mineral rights.
George P.'s grandfather had also planned to attend the ceremony. But aides said the 90-year-old elder Bush decided to remain in Houston, where the oldest living former U.S. president was released from a hospital earlier this week for treatment of shortness of breath.
Jeb Bush made the appearance as the former Florida governor explores a 2016 presidential run. He didn't address attendees or speak to reporters.
