Jaylon Smith Signs 4-Year Deal With Dallas Cowboys

IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - Jaylon Smith signed his four-year deal with the Cowboys, team COO Stephen Jones tells The Fan, but that's just another step in a long process.

The Cowboys selected Smith with the 34th overall pick despite a serious knee injury he sustained in Notre Dame's loss in the Fiesta Bowl.

Recovery from the surgery on the anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee is predictable. But Smith also suffered nerve damage.

The Cowboys are hopeful the nerve will "re-fire'' but despite owner Jerry Jones' optimism there, Dallas in reality  looks at this season as a "redshirt'' year for Smith, who can be a star in 2017 and beyond should he return to the field.

As a second-round pick (along with those lower and unlike first-rounder Ezekiel Elliott), Smith's deal is only partially guaranteed.
