Cowboys Fans At Square One After Dez Arrest
DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) – Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has found himself in the midst of trouble off the field, and subsequent criticism once again.
Bryant, 23, voluntarily turned himself in to police in the Dallas suburb of Desoto, yesterday afternoon after a warrant was issued for his arrest on a misdemeanor charge against a female family member.
The woman in question? His own mother, Angela Bryant.
At first glance, the notion of the preceding statement is deplorable and certainly does not come without shock that it would lead many critics and even Cowboys fans alike to publicly condemn Dez Bryant through various social and media outlets.
But what seems to be lost through all of the relentless, widespread condemnation is the fact that only one side of the story has been told thus far. Communal judge, jury and executioner has already been placed on to Dez Bryant, when only his mother's side of the story has been made public.
Bryant was released on $1,500 bond shortly after he turned himself in Monday afternoon and has not said anything publicly regarding the situation. He would only go on to tell WFAA-TV that same day "I'm good. I'm good" when asked for his tale of what exactly happened
According to Angela Bryant's account via an arrest warrant affidavit to police, she claims that she and her son got into an argument on Saturday afternoon at her Desoto home. She then accused her son of grabbing her by the T-shirt, ripping it and the bra she was wearing. She also accused Bryant of grabbing her by the hair and slapping her across the face with his ball cap. During a frantic 911 call she placed to police, she can be heard saying, "I can't keep letting him do me like this. I'm tired. I'm going to put an end to it today." Angela Bryant also says things like her son "tried to kill me," and "He won't go home. I keep telling him to go home. He won't go."
When officers responded to the home, they found Angela Bryant's wrists swollen and her left thumb injured, all consequences she claims are from her son's merciless grip on her.
In a seemingly fitting, twist to the story, Bryant drove away from his mother's home after the incident in a pearl white Lincoln Navigator with a license plate reading, "Bail Me," belonging to his mentor and former bail bondsman David Wells.
And here Cowboys fans are yet again, back at square one, frustrated with a player who they are torn between loving and hating; a player with so much promise, sullied by his continuously disappointing antics off the football field.
Along with the misdemeanor assault charge, which carries a maximum punishment of a year in jail and a $4,000 dollar fine, Bryant faces possible penalties implemented by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell under the league's personal conduct policy.
There is no question that Dez Bryant's immaturity continues to prevail and his capabilities of logical discernment are severely lacking.
But Angela Bryant's questionable past should not go without recognition either-- a woman with a tarnished history that includes serving prison time for selling crack cocaine in 1997 and also alleged claims of being involved in prostitution.
Let it also be known that Angela Bryant pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charge of supplying false information to a police officer in May 2008 and pleaded guilty to a drug charge in July 2009, as she was busted for possessing and selling crack cocaine. The Dallas Morning News found proof of both prior records in Lufkin, Texas.
What exactly would those actions indicate? That there's a pre-disposition for lying.
As heartless as it may be to fathom, who is to say if Angela Bryant's account of what transpired that fateful day is the truth, even partially?
