Jailed Texas Woman Dies After Being Shot With Stun Gun
WACO, Texas (AP) -- The Texas Rangers are investigating after a 37-year-old woman died hours after being shot with a stun gun while deputies took her into custody at a Waco courthouse.
Justice of the Peace Walter H. ``Pete'' Peterson told the Waco Tribune-Herald Iretha Lilly was declared dead Monday night at the hospital where she was taken after being found unresponsive at the McLennan County Jail. Peterson requested an autopsy.
Lilly was jailed Monday morning for testing positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and marijuana during sentencing for a shoplifting charge. Lilly was ordered to jail for 100 days as part of deferred adjudication.
Lilly's attorney, Paula Allen, said Lilly became unruly during the proceeding.
A sheriff's official says multiple deputies helped subdue Lilly, but only one stun gun was involved.
