Is It 'Davy' Crockett Or 'David' Crockett?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - He was "the king of the wild frontier," but what is his preferred first name? "Davy" or "David" Crockett?

He was born "David," signed documents "David" and titled his 1834 autobiography "A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee." It's David Crockett State Park near Lawrenceburg, Tenn. A 2005 book by Buddy Levy was "The Real Life Adventures of David Crockett." It's David Crockett High School in Washington County.

But there's Davy Crockett Lake in Greene County and another near Humboldt. In Nashville, it's the Davy Crockett Tower. It's the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Greene County.

The Tennessee Encyclopedia of History & Culture, ever diplomatic, titles his entry "Crockett, David "Davy."

For sure, he was a lawmaker and defender at the Alamo.
