Irving School Collecting 'Cents For Sandy'

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Kindergarteners will pair with fourth and fifth grade students at an Irving elementary school for a campaign to raise money for the victims of Sandy. It is called 'Cents For Sandy,' and Thomas Haley Elementary School has been down this road before with rewarding results.

Earlier this year, students made jewelry and sold the items that they made. They raised about $800 for the victims of the April 2012 tornado in Lancaster. But this time, the students will not be making and selling any items. They are simply collecting spare change. "For the next two weeks, we are asking you to look in your hearts and wallets and donate your spare change to the people affected by Hurricane Sandy," said fifth grade student Carlos Andrade during morning announcements.

Students will stop by classrooms each morning to collect change, and add up the amounts based on grade level. The grade that raises the most in spare change by November 16 will be awarded with a popcorn party. The money will ultimately be donated to the American Red Cross to help Sandy victims.

Eighty-two percent of the students at this campus are considered economically disadvantaged. But their principal said that most of the students do not consider themselves disadvantaged at all -- and they are eager to help others.

Principal Tanya Jones said that she understands the value of having this kind of support. She was a victim of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. "I know firsthand what it feels like to live a good life one day -- have a home, have clothes, have everything -- and then, the next day, everything is gone," she said.

Two teachers at Thomas Haley Elementary School, Christine Scovill and Joyce Griffin, presented the 'Cents For Sandy' project to Jones this week, and she immediately agreed that it was a good idea for the students.
