Irving School Board Trustee Resigns After Shoplifting Charge

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - An Irving Independent School District school board trustee, who was arrested for shoplifting over the weekend, has resigned.

Norma Gonzales allegedly stuck about $184 worth of merchandise in her purse while at a Wal-Mart store. When Gonzales exited the building the merchandise in her bag set off an anti-theft alarm.

Loss prevention officers stopped Gonzales but she refused to stay, fleeing the store with the merchandise. Irving police had already been contacted and officers pulled Gonzales over a short distance from the store.

The 42-year-old submitted her resignation to Irving ISD Interim Superintendent Weldon Hafley and Board President Dr. Steven Jones on Monday.

Gonzales was charged with Theft of Property, posted bond, and was released from the Irving Jail on Sunday.

Administrators with the Irving ISD say a special election may be held to fill her position.
