Irving Police Chief Retiring

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) – Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd announced Monday he will retire at the end of the year.  He's led the department since 2004.

"It has been an honor to serve the City of Irving and to have worked with so many wonderful men and women in the department," said Boyd. "I am proud of our accomplishments and am confident the values we have instilled will carry forward."

Chief Boyd joined the Irving Police Department in 1980, where he spent his rookie year. He then worked for the Arlington Police Department for 22 years before returning to Irving.

"For twelve years, Chief Boyd has been a rock of stability and professionalism for the Irving Police Department, our communities, and the City of Irving," said Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne. "He has managed the law enforcement needs of our city with honor, dignity, and grace. Chief Boyd exemplifies the combination of strong moral character and kind-hearted servant leadership we are blessed to see throughout the ranks of our Irving Police Department. It has been a true privilege to be able to rely on his counsel, wisdom, and steadying hand, even under difficult circumstances. I know I can say with complete certitude that the Chief has the most heartfelt gratitude from the citizens of Irving for his selfless devotion in leading our officers and working to truly protect and serve our diverse communities. While Chief Boyd will be dearly missed, I am ever-so-thankful that our City was blessed by his presence for these past twelve years."

The city of Irving is launching a national search for its next police chief and has hired executive recruitment firm, Strategic Government Resources, to lead the effort. The position will be posted Aug. 30, here.

"Chief Boyd has done an excellent job leading his department, and is a consummate professional," said Irving City Manager Chris Hillman. "His strengths are many. He understood the value of building relationships throughout the community, while simultaneously working to ensure his department had the tools and knowledge required to work in a business that is becoming increasingly challenging. The department he leaves is trained, equipped and prepared."
