Irving Launching Police Support Campaign

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - There has been a lot of unrest recently between police officers and the communities which they serve, but a North Texas mayor is hoping to change the way that the officers are treated. Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne will be at the city's convention center on Wednesday to launch the new campaign.
It has been dubbed Irving High Five, and it is meant to recognize police officers for what they do to protect citizens on a daily basis. Van Duyne hopes that the support campaign catches on. More details about it will be announced at a 10:00 a.m. event on Wednesday morning.
These types of appreciation efforts are becoming a trend. The City of Carrollton also just rolled out a support campaign called In It Together.
The timing comes after public outrage surrounding a number of officer-involved shootings. Just recently, an Arlington officer shot and killed an unarmed college student at a car dealership. The rookie police officer was fired. And, just last month in Fort Worth, a man was killed by a bicycle officer outside of a downtown restaurant. The officer claimed that the man refused to put down a gun.
Police officers nationwide are under intense scrutiny, and some citizens have even reacted violently.
Just two months ago, James Boulware attacked the Dallas Police Department's headquarters. He pulled up to the building in an armored van and firing shots. Boulware was killed by SWAT officers.
