Investigation After FB Police Officer Shoots 16-Year-Old In Addison

The shooting happened at a gas station at Marsh Lane and Spring Valley Road, just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday night. Detectives later said that the off-duty officer saw a vehicle being burglarized at a nearby apartment complex. The suspects drove away from the scene, but the officer pursued them in his own vehicle.
The chase ended in gunfire, with the driver being struck and killed and the passenger being injured.
Police in Addison worked through the morning, piecing together what happened. At one point, investigators cordoned off an area surrounding the gas station and were searching two vehicles.
Witnesses say the driver of a black SUV was chasing a red Dodge Challenger. Damage and police markings on the road in front of the gas station seem to indicate there was either a spinout or a collision. Witnesses say they saw a person get out of the SUV and that is when the gunfire started.
One man said, "It was pretty rapid fire. Like, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam! It was pretty rapid. I mean it was quick and it was just like shocking."
The sound of gunfire brought stunned residents nearby rushing from their homes to see what happened. One witness said neighbors, "... were just all surprised because nothing like this ever happens here. They were just like, 'what?' I guess it's all kind of shocking and scary."
The medical examiner has identified 16-year old Jose Raul Cruz of Dallas as the person killed. Another person was injured during the incident and taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital. The condition of that person, who has not been identified, is not known.
The officer, who was not hurt, is now on administrative leave.
