Insect Experts Offer Advice If Swarmed By Bees -- Run!
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It seems every year, around this time you hear about someone being seriously injured or killed after being attacked by killer bees.
According to entomologists, the bees will attack if they feel it's necessary to defend their territory.
Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples has some advice if you should ever be attacked -- run! "You should try to outrun the bees and protect your face from stings. Next, try to find shelter or cover yourself with something like a blanket, sleeping bag or clothes," he advised.
You may have cartoon images of bees chasing a character that runs and hides, but the swarm stops and lingers until they come out of hiding… well that's actually true. "Don't jump into the water because killer bees will wait for you to come up for air," Staples said.
There are a variety of things that can cause bees to charge out of the hive. "Vibrations, caused by machinery like lawnmowers and tractors, can make the bees feel threatened and provoke an attack," Staples explained.
Bee stings can have very serious medical consequences if the individual is allergic or has been stung more than 15 times. Staples said if either is the case the individual should seek immediate medical attention.
