Indiana Plane Crash Sparks Concerns In North Texas
ADDISON (CBSDFW.COM) – A plane crash into a neighborhood in Indiana has re-ignited concerns in North Texas that a similar incident could take place here.
Small and private planes fly overhead near hundreds of homes and businesses in the Addison area and other North Texas areas daily.
Residents and business owners near the Addison Airport say their worst nightmare came true in Indiana Sunday, when a private plane experienced technical issues while it was attempting to circle back to a nearby airport. The plane then crashed into 3 homes, killing 2 people.
According to the FAA, most crashes happen during landing or takeoff, so residents near small airports are at the highest risk.
"As soon as I moved into the area and I realized that my apartment was directly under the flight pattern, it became an issue," said Brenda Johnson, who lives blocks away from Addison Airport. "It's something I think about."
The FAA says pilots must keep their planes and themselves flight-worthy and are subjected to routine inspections. Their licenses could be revoked or suspended if they are not in compliance. Airports are responsible for maintaining runways, lights and markings and must keep a certain amount of land around the runway empty.
Despite all of that, crashes still happen.
"My home happens to be in everyone's flight plan for landing and takeoff's so that's kind of scary," said Brenda Schults, owner of Addison Pilot Shop.
Schults has worked with pilots around the world. She says there's a lesson to be learned after every crash.
"It's always a sad thing," she said. "But then I think it calls attention to training and keeping standards up."
