If It's March, Then It's Full Of Madness
When I joined CBS in March 2004, I wasn't that big of a basketball fan, only football and golf. But that all changed quickly once I got on board here.
The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, also known as "March Madness" is one of the biggest sporting events in the world and one of the most complicated ones to cover from a broadcast technical point of view. The "madness" is the result of the high energy level of excitement the games generate plus the high number of teams eliminated within a four day period, from 64 teams on Thursday morning down to 16 teams by that Sunday evening. Think about it: by this coming Sunday evening, three out of four teams that start out on Thursday or Friday are eliminated by Sunday evening. If a teams loses, it's "one and done." And there are always surprises where a top seeded team is eliminated early on and a "Cinderella" team emerges. You just don't know what will happen but we do know it will be fun. The one thing that I am disappointed about is that not one Texas team made the Tournament this year for the first time since 1977.
This year, as was the case last year, CBS and its partner Turner Sports will be presenting the games starting tonight with Round One on truTV. The other Turner Sports networks include TBS and TNT. These four networks together will cover individual games through Sunday, March 31st (all early rounds, the "Sweet 16", and the "Elite 8"). Once the Tournament moves to the Final Four and the Championship game in April, CBS will have exclusive coverage.
