Icy Trees & Power Lines, But Not Roads
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texans were prepared for the worst on Monday morning after cold temperatures and precipitation threatened to coat DFW roads with a layer of ice. And now, hours after the winter storm pushed through, many surfaces are slick -- but only a bit wet from rain.
Conditions did not quite get chilly enough to ice over the roads. Everything stayed in liquid form, except for a handful of standing water spots that presented themselves to drivers very early in the day. There were a few places covered with ice on Monday, however. You just had to look up to find them.
Ice was found in the trees and on the power lines in Collin County. The weight of it bent down branches in Frisco and covered the leaves in Plano. It was pretty to see, but it was nothing hazardous.
Meanwhile, on the ground, road crews continued to treat bridge and overpasses, laying down a salt and sand mixture throughout Collin County and Denton County just in case things got worse. That never happened, though, and drivers were pleasantly surprised to find all clear roads at dawn.
"They're not that bad, just wet really," said Denton resident Dennis Luellen. "I guess the one degree made a big difference."
"I expected it because they kept the warnings on," said Plano resident Nooshi Jahani, "but when I woke up this morning, I looked in the backyard and everything was sort of wet. I figured it's good."
And even those who were ready to take on icy streets said that they did nothing special to prepare for such an occasion. After all, those driver added, this is Texas. The weather forecast can change quickly.
