DFW Opens Another Runway Sunday
GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - (Updated Sunday, Dec 8, 8:37 AM) Limited operations continued at DFW International Airport on Sunday, with North Texas covered in a coating of ice. Temperatures dropped into the teens and many surfaces which had previously been treated had to be made safe again.
Overnight, another runway was cleared which makes a total of three runways fully operational.
There were 2076 passengers in the terminals, down from 3000 passengers since Saturday. About 400 departures have been canceled so far for Sunday. DFW Airport advises all passengers to check with their airlines to rebook or to find the latest flight information. Flight Information is also available at www.dfwairport.com/flights .
As of 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, at least two runways were open at the airport, though crews were working to clear additional runways.
The roads surrounding the airport remain a serious concern as well. Ice and slush that may have melted on Friday has since just refroze in the continued sub-freezing temperatures. This has led to icy patches all over the Metroplex. And this cycle will remain in place throughout the weekend and into Monday.
Although many highways across DFW have been closed due to icy conditions, highways immediately around the airport are still open to traffic. The Texas Department of Transportation is keeping a close eye on these passageways, but the roads are slick and dangerous. Any motorists heading to the airport have been advised to use great caution.
Taxi services to and from the airport are also working on a limited basis due to icy roads and difficult driving conditions. The airport estimates customers are experiencing an average wait of 15 minutes for taxi service.
Meanwhile, inside of DFW International Airport, officials made more than 4,000 cots and blankets available to the thousands of travelers who were stranded, along with toiletry kits, diapers and baby formula as needed. Some food stands also remained open throughout the night, including a limited supply of free refreshments.
The airport even brought in clowns, face painting stations and sketch artists to help entertain the crowds.
